What Is a Word Wall?
The Word Wall is primarily made up of high-frequency words. They
are the words students encounter most frequently in their reading
and need most often in their writing. Each week five new words are
introduced. We practice reading and spelling these new words and
then they're placed on the word wall. The children are held accountable
for the correct spelling of these words. The names of the kids in
our class are included on the Word Wall.
Click here to learn some fun ways for you and your child to learn the spelling words. Each week we will also have some "word family" words.
These are rhyming words that are used to help children to spell
and write other words with the same spelling pattern; for example,
the word fun can be used to write run, bun, gun, sun, etc.
Each Monday your child will write the new Word Wall Words and bring
them home to study. We will do various activities with them during
the week, followed up with a spelling
test on Friday. For homework, your child will be expected to
write and illustrate a sentence using the word. By the end of the
year your child will be writing short paragraphs and stories. This
is so exciting!
